Iin the May 8th futbol game with team Peace Corps vs. team Bad Ass Belizeans from Esperanza, White Gyal, #44, played as "sweeper", defending the goal and doing what she could to keep her team from losing. She blocked three significant shots, sustained a bruised toe, and significant body-ball impact to her right forearm and her right shin. She appears to be right-footed in this sport even though the majority of her activity is "left handed". The final score was BZ 7 to PC 3. It could've been a worse loss for PC if White Gyal hadn't been around.
White Gyal played well and will be invited back to play again for the "Black Orchids", or for the general "Peace Corps" team when they lack enough boys or girls and have to go co-ed. The boys team is called "Gibnuts" therefore the co-ed nickname that emerged was "Black Nuts"... however this name has been predominantly shut down. "Lets go Peace Corps!" is a little more appropriate for cheers and encouraging shouts from the sidelines.
Though White Gyal played soccer as a child and into her adolescence, she wasn't very good and therefore didn't get played very often on the field. The last team she ever played on was completely adolescent girls who, as we all know, can be bitches. This experience left a bad taste in White Gyal's mouth, so to speak, so she never got on the field again really, until this first game with the Peace Corps volunteers. Overall it was a great experience and the team is gearing up for a Volunteers vs. New Trainees game to take place sometime around the upcoming swearing-in ceremony in late May.
White Gyal has decided to leave her post-traumatic-awkward-adolescent-soccer-playing-stress behind and embrace the newness of futbol. What matters most is that you have fun, and try to kick the other teams balls. Meaning the futbol, out of your side of the field. If you lose, its ok. Its only a game. More information on Peace Corps futbolistas victories coming soon.
go futbol! I was just thinking that I should join one of the indoor leagues here if we stay in Portland. then I thought about how many years it's been since playing (with equally bitchy girls, I'm sure) and what team I would join. I've decided on the we-don't-really-know-what-we're-doing-but-want-to-have-fun level of play. as a 20-something just out for a little exercise, a fun, shin-bruising game sounds awesome.
ReplyDeleteexcited to hear about your next venture onto the field!
